Death of a Polish diver in the Bestouan cave

On Monday, January 6, there was a fatal accident in France involving a 40-year-old diver from Poland. The tragedy occurred in the French cave Bestouan, near the town beach of Cassis, near Marseille. The alerted emergency services arrived at the scene and undertook a search operation. After several hours the body of the missing Pole was located.

At around 17:00 emergency services were informed of the disappearance of a Pole in the Bestouan cave. Fire brigade divers specialising in this type of action and divers of the Spéléo Secours Français arrived on the scene, around 30 people in total. The search and rescue operation ended around 1.00am, when the body of the Polish diver was found, 400m from the cave entrance.

It is known that the victim of the fatal accident was exploring the cave with three other divers from Poland. None of the other dive participants were hurt. The Poles were an experienced group and were exploring using closed circuits. The accident victim had the day before conducted a dive to a depth of 118 metres in the Goul du Pont cave.

Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the accident. An autopsy will also be carried out, which may provide new information on the cause of the Pole’s death.
