Dangerous find during canal cleaning in Gizycko

While cleaning the Łuczański Canal in Giżycko, a group of divers found two unexploded ordnance. The dangerous find was located on Saturday, 16.04 in a very sensitive point of the canal, on the navigable route near the swing bridge, which is the main entry road to the city from Olsztyn. After the shells were found, the organiser of the canal cleaning – the diving club “Płetwal” from Giżycko, informed the relevant services.

Last Saturday, divers from Giżycko and the surrounding area gathered in numbers of about 20 people to take part in another action of cleaning the waters near the capital of the Land of the Great Lakes, organised by the local diving club “Płetwal”. Giżycko is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Mazurian Lake District, so the surrounding lakes and canals need regular cleaning.

Bottles from the lake

During subsequent clean-ups of the bottom of Mazurian reservoirs, apart from typical rubbish such as cans, bottles, plastic wrappers and common rubbish, there are always a few surprises. Sometimes these are not very valuable tyres or shopping carts, and sometimes pre-war bottles from local breweries. This time, however, two shells of undetermined origin fell prey to the “flippers”.

“It is elbow to wrist length. I think its diameter is 10-12 cm. I am not able to say what it is exactly” – Adam Sobański of KP “Płetwal” in Giżycko reported.

Artillery ammunition was found at a depth of about 1.5 metres just offshore. The dangerous find was taken care of by divers from the Group of Miner Divers from Gdynia, who usually take and neutralise such finds.

The result of the cleaning of the Łuczański Canal 2016, apart from the above mentioned shells, is… 3 full containers of rubbish. On the one hand, it is good that they are no longer in the water, on the other hand, they are a tangible proof of recklessness and poor attitude of tourists visiting Giżycko every summer.
