The Internet was enthralled by the photogrammetry of the flooded Maria Concordia mine, a sample of which was shared by the Facebook profile of the XDEEP brand. This magnificent and pioneering work, which we have known about for some time, has exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations. At the same time, we must remember that we are only talking about plucked parts of the whole, and we are still waiting for the final result!
I also hasten to inform all of our readers that you will be able to learn more about the scanning and photogrammetry of the flooded Polish mines Marie-Agnes and Maria Concordia in future issues of DIVERS24 magazine. For the upcoming (22nd) issue, Marcin Stempniewicz has prepared an article on the Marie-Agnes scanning. And Maria Concordia and the process of creating its photogrammetric scan will appear in the next issue.
This is a disused, flooded magnesite mine, which is located in the Lower Silesia province. The place is undoubtedly characterized by beautiful, irregular corridors, visible magnesite veins and crystal-clear water. The beauty of the place has been brought out by Marcin Stempniewicz, who has begun creating a complete photogrammetric scan of the mine. The final result is expected to include all four levels of corridors and a 40-meter-deep shaft.
Project participants spent many hours in the mine, collecting material to create photogrammetric 3D models. Thanks to their work and commitment, everyone will have the opportunity to see what Maria Concordia looks like underwater. Certainly, the model will be a fantastic aid when planning dives. In addition, this pioneering project opens many doors behind which lies… well, that we can only imagine. The answers to our guesses will come in the near future, but it promises to be very exciting!
Behind the activities of the Maria Concordia mine scanning project is a team of passionate individuals: Marcin Stempniewicz, Mikko Paasi, Bartek Kaminski, Mariusz Milka, Bartosz Przybylski, Mateusz Zahora, and Kamil Porembinski. You can learn more about their activities on the official website of the project.
In anticipation of more material on the Marie-Agnes and Mark Concordia mines, I recommend archived issues of DIVERS24 magazine, which have already featured texts on photogrammetry. The first of these was Mariusz Milka’s article – Scanning an ancient wreck, about an archaeological site in Croatia. In turn, the second was the text of Bartlomiej Pitala – Photogrammetry in the Baltic, posted below.
