The remains of an ancient shipwreck, dating back to Roman times, have been found in the waters of the Red Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia by a team of local archaeologists supported by their German colleagues. Now the discovered artefacts will be put on display as an exhibition at the National Museum in Riyadh.

It can be expected that the aforementioned exhibition will soon expand, as in the same area between Rabigh and Al-Shoibah archaeologists have found another wreck dating from the early Islamic period.

A member of the research team, German archaeologist Michaela Reinfeld says there are still a great many wrecks waiting to be discovered in the search area. It is this archaeological wealth that has prompted the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage to step up efforts to search for and secure objects of historical value.

As well as conducting research, the German underwater archaeologists were also tasked with training their colleagues from Saudi Arabia and familiarising them with the techniques and procedures used by archaeologists around the world.

Mahdi Al-Qari, head of the Saudi archaeological team, said that the successive civilisations living on the Arabian Peninsula were the main factors that have left a wonderful piece of history underwater. The Red Sea has been a trade route since ancient times, and today nearly 50 sites have been mapped and classified as important from an archaeological and historical point of view together with colleagues from Germany.

“The cultural heritage hidden under water is part of our identity and our nation’s history. Putting it under proper protection is a responsibility that falls on all of us,” Al-Qari explained.

The Saudi also thanked the German archaeologists for their support and efforts together during the search. Both their expertise and training are invaluable help to Saudi archaeologists, who are only at the beginning of their journey and are laying the foundations of underwater archaeology in their country.
