In just 5 days – on 15 February 2015 – the Cazadero Diving Expedition 2016 will begin. It is an expedition organized by Poles, whose main goal is to set a world record in high altitude diving. Apart from the record itself, the participants of the expedition will also explore Argentina’s Lake Cazadero – the highest body of water in the world.
This coming Monday, Marcel Korkuś and Bartosz Wnęk will start their expedition, whose destination is at the top of the Andean volcano Cerro Tipas (6658m), at an altitude of 5990 metres. Lake Cazadero is thus the highest body of water on Earth. Its dimensions are 210 metres long and 90 metres wide. The depth of the reservoir is unknown, but the members of the expedition will only need to descend 5 metres to set a Guinness record, and will have to spend 20 minutes there.
“We are also expecting ice on Cazadero. However, we are prepared for anything.”
The expedition itself is planned for about 3 weeks. The first 2 weeks will be devoted to acclimatisation and getting to the lake, while in the 3rd week an attempt will be made to dive in and break the existing record, which… also belongs to Poles and was set last year by participants of the Nevado Tres Cruces 2015 MedExpedition and is 5915m above sea level.
One might even be tempted to say that high-altitude diving is the domain of our compatriots. Apart from the above-mentioned expeditions, in 2012 the members of the Medexpedition conducted a dive at the altitude of 5715 m in the lake El Lago de los Polacos located on the volcano Ojos del Salado. Our archives also contain texts describing Kamil Iwankiewicz’s project – the Crown of the Earth’s Lakes. As part of a series of expeditions, Kamil planned dives in the highest water reservoirs on each of the continents.
“All of our several weeks of mountain action will take place away from civilisation and mobile phone coverage. Therefore, we will depend on obtaining electricity from a solar panel. We will need the energy accumulated during the day to charge: headlamps, gopro cameras, DSLR cameras, two GPSs, a spot, a dive computer and, of course, a satellite phone to be able to inform you daily about our mountain-diving activities”
