Baltic Sea: Soviet submarine discovered

Yesterday, we reported on the recovery of an American Wildcat aircraft from Lake Michigan. Today, we have received fresh news from a much closer location – the Baltic Sea. Off the coast of Sweden, a unique wreck has been found – a submarine belonging to the USSR.

According to yesterday’s editions of Swedish newspapers, the vessel sank 71 years ago, in 1941. The Swedish Navy investigated the wreck, but the find was reported by an anonymous diver.

From the available information we know so far that the wreck lies in the south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea, near Öland. This area was under the influence of the Third Reich during World War II and was heavily mined.

From the preliminary findings it is known that the ship, sailing on the surface, went straight into a minefield. As a result of the damage caused by the explosion it broke in half and sank.

Below is a video clip recorded by the crew of the research vessel HMS Belos and made available courtesy of the Swedish Navy. In the video we can see that the depth at which the wreck is located is only 40m!
