The F4F Wildcat fighter was an American design that was incorporated into both the US Navy and the British Royal Navy in 1940. The British were the first to use them in combat, during World War II. During the war in the Pacific, the aircraft was one of the best performers in combat during the initial phase of hostilities.

The costs of excavating the aircraft were covered by the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. By the will of the said foundation, the aircraft will go to one of the museums in the Chicago area.

More than 17,000 pilots underwent training on Lake Michigan! Among them the future US President George Bush senior.
