On 28 November, already on the first day of the Vertical Blue Freediving Championship in the Bahamas, the only Polish competitor – Mateusz Malina – achieved his first success. Hardly had he time to return as world record holder from the pool competition in Brno, in the Caribbean he dived to the depth of 114.5 m setting a new Polish record in free diving at depth. The competition will last until 5 December – who knows what else Malina will surprise us with?

This is Malina’s 26th Polish record and the second within the space of one month! On 9 November, during the freediving competition in Brno, in the DNF category, which consists in covering the longest distance under water in one breath without fins, the Pole swam 226 m, achieving the best result in the world. With his feat in Dean’s Blue Hole off Long Island in the Bahamas, the athlete confirms that he is in top form.

I have always wanted to dive in this place, considered one of the best freediver locations in the world, but until recently it was out of my reach. Freediving requires not only a lot of sacrifice and painstaking work, but also funds, because it involves travelling to distant places where the most important competitions in this discipline take place,” says Mateusz Malina. – says Mateusz Malina and adds: “Thanks to my sponsor, who believed in my potential and in a difficult moment made it possible for me to continue my sports career, today I can fulfil my dreams and professional goals.

And he does it extremely effectively! Since Malina joined the “Grena Talents Forge” programme of Grena, the international medical company, in July 2014, new energy has entered the Pole and his career is gaining momentum.

“I keep raising the bar for myself to climb to new heights. I know that only with systematic work will I be able to go beyond my current achievements and break my own records. And the success in Brno and now in the Bahamas is another confirmation for me that it is worth it!” – Malina concludes.

Although it is hard to believe, the 28-year-old athlete, born in Ustroń, where there wasn’t even a swimming pool (!), learned the difficult art of freediving on his own – from internet instructional videos. Today, he is the only Pole among the world leaders in freediving – he holds the title of the world vice-champion from 2011, the world record in the category of the longest distance underwater in swimming without fins on one breath and 26 Polish records. Freediving is a sport discipline which is only just developing in Poland. Mateusz Malina is blazing a trail proving that perseverance and passion can make even the craziest dreams come true.

The “Grena Talents Forge” programme is run by an international medical company GRENA Ltd, operating also on the Polish market as a supplier of e.g. equipment for innovative surgeries in thoracic surgery (chest surgery). The idea behind the programme is to support young talented people in local markets. In Poland, apart from Mateusz Malina, Sebastian Druszkiewicz, a speed skater and member of the Polish national team at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014, who has also recently competed in the 10 km World Cup in Seoul, has also been supported.
