In Nevada’s gambling capital Las Vegas, an unusual event took place to celebrate US Veterans Day. The Silverton Casino hosted a poker game… underwater! The idea came from the nonprofit Dive Alliance, which helps veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The game was played in a giant aquarium. During the game, both the veteran players and the dealer were using diving equipment at all times, and everything was watched by the fish that inhabit the aquarium on a daily basis.
It is no coincidence that a large aquarium was chosen as the venue for the game, as Dive Alliance bases its therapy on underwater activities. As it turns out, diving works very well as an aid in dealing with the effects of post-traumatic stress, which many soldiers suffer from.
“The main purpose of the game was to make people aware of what we do and how we help our veterans. Through diving activities, people who suffer from post-traumatic stress definitely feel better physically as well as mentally.” – explained Rendon McNeil of the Dive Alliance.
Playing poker in the midst of thousands of exotic fish that were swimming around all the time is certainly an unusual and very enjoyable experience and all the participants had a great time. Special bars made of clay, which are heavier than standard ones, were also used during the game.
The casino’s management was also extremely pleased with the whole action. “On the one hand, it was an unusual promotional opportunity, but also in a great initiative through which we could help our soldiers.” – said Cory Klerk, casino director.
More similar events are already planned and will be held in Idaho and Las Vegas.
