Another piece of equipment that has found its way into the hands of our testers is a very interesting X-deep wing called Ghost. Already at first glance the paraglider is characterised by great and well-thought-out workmanship and very precise finishing touches. It has a lot of interesting solutions that make it a very interesting alternative when choosing and purchasing BCD for a single cylinder.
In recent days we had an opportunity in the club to test a very light wing by X-deep, dedicated to diving with a single cylinder. The equipment is certainly worthy of attention, and a few observations after diving in it you will find below.
At first glance, BCD has been made very durable and robust. The weight-saving design is very impressive. The harness allows for individual adjustment to the diver, thanks to a system of straps on sliding buckles. Mounting buckles on both shoulder straps makes it very easy to both dress the equipment and get out of the harness after the dive.
In the tested wing, a very interesting connector for the inflator hose, which leads the air out of the highest point of the compensator, catches the eye.
According to the designers, the interesting shape of the wing is supposed to make it easier to stay above the water surface, as a considerable part of the wing volume is at the bottom. Well, indeed diving in X-deep is fun. The wing is very light. Weight with adapter and D-rings, without straps holding the cylinder, is only 2,495 kg.
Fitting the equipment and any underwater adjustments are trouble-free. In the configuration with a 15 l cylinder, everything was ok. However, using a low 12 l cylinder could risk damaging the lower part of the bag’s shell. Nevertheless, the wing design dedicated to travel and diving in commercial bases rather limits such a combination. In most of the bases we have “high” 12-litres at our disposal.
As for the harness itself, there is a very comfortable crotch strap leading out on the back from two attachment points. One belt was sufficient to hold and fully stabilise a 15 l bottle.
Finally, mention should also be made of the extremely low hydrodynamic resistance obtained with this model, mainly thanks to the bag design already mentioned.
Ghost is a great solution, especially for people who appreciate the convenience of dressing and small size and low weight. It will certainly prove very useful during both short and long journeys. The whole construction is well-thought-out and made with attention to detail, and every now and then you’ll discover a little something that improves the comfort of using this wing. Generally I think it is worth recommending to everyone.
The lion’s share of the tests was conducted for us (and provided many valuable comments) by Sebastian Łepkowski from the Scuba Diving Club “Płetwal” in Giżycko. Sebastian is a very experienced diver with many years of instructor experience and a fanatic about testing new equipment solutions, as well as diving in retro gear.
