Ahmed Gabr – preparations for the record

Ahmed Gabr is an Egyptian diver, a former member of the special forces and a participant in a special training course lasting several months at a US Navy facility, who has decided to dethrone Nuno Gomes, the current holder of the record for the deepest open-circuit dive. The assumed depth to which Ahmed plans to descend is 350m.

Since 2005, the world record has belonged to South African representative Nuno Gomes, who dived and happily returned from a depth of 318.5m. Today, Ahmed wants not only to exceed this limit, but to push it over 30m! At this ceiling, this is a gigantic distance and it is really hard to imagine that such a plunge is even possible.

There are two weeks left before the attempt. Exactly on the 18th of September it is planned to sail to the waters of southern Dahab, during which the attempt to beat the current record will take place. According to the plan, the 350m descent will take less than 30 minutes. The other way is a completely different story and according to estimates the whole attempt will take nearly 14h! Of course, all this is done in order to decompress and allow Ahemd to safely return to the surface.

To ensure everything goes smoothly, safely and according to plan, the record-breaking diver will be supported by 14 divers who will operate at various depths. During the entire dive, Ahmed Gabr will use close to 90(!) cylinders with breathing mixes adapted to the depth.

Preparations for the inexorably approaching date of 18 September have been underway for over a year. During this time Ahmed has made many dives to increasing depths to prepare himself, his body and the support team for this huge challenge. In the final 350m challenge, the diver will rely on three different computers to measure the depth of the dive and will additionally be required to collect the markers left behind to confirm that the declared depth has been reached. Although the announced depth to which he will attempt to descend has been set at 350m, anything below 318m will be a success and will break the previous record.

Of course, such a great action cannot take place without external support. Among the many sponsors are the H2O Divers Dahab Diving Centre, the National Bank of Egypt, the Diving Emergency Center Organization – DECO and… the Polish diving equipment manufacturer Xdeep!

However, as it turns out, the funds raised so far are only a part of those needed to finance the entire project. Thanks to croudfunding, namely this websiteyou can help to achieve the goal. What’s more, anyone who decides to do so will have an opportunity to draw an interesting prize directly from the contender for the record!
