The incident occurred on Saturday, January 18, in the waters of Mġarr ix-Xini Bay off the coast of the island of Gozo, in the Mediterranean Sea. Laconic Maltese media reports said the victim was 35-year-old Christine Gauci, a professional soldier with the AFM. Citing local police, the media reports unspecified problems the woman allegedly had during the fatal dive that ultimately led to her death.

We know that the dive began on Saturday morning. Subsequently, the person with whom Gauci was conducting the dive called emergency services to the site after the woman failed to surface within the specified time.

At 10:30 a.m., emergency services and representatives of the Armed Forces of Malta arrived on the scene. Once found, the accident victim was transported to shore. Despite an attempt at resuscitation, Christine unfortunately could not be saved. The accident is being investigated and explained by local services.

AFM soldier injured

Christine Gauci applied to the AFM in 2005. At the time, she became the only woman allowed to recruit in Company C, Malta’s special forces tasked with high-risk operations. Developing as a soldier, she trained with British Army formations and later specialized in air defense. In 2010, she took part in a mission in Afghanistan.

In a 2013 interview. Gauci admitted that her biggest dream is to be able to serve the country in a formation related to diving.
