A 96-year-old British World War II veteran has once again broken his own record by becoming the world’s oldest diver! The record-breaking dive took place on the famous wreck of the ‘Zenobia’, which has been resting on the seabed since 1980, about 2km off the coast of Cyprus.

The ageing diver, originally from Port Sunlight in the North West of England, now lives in Cyprus where he enjoys a well-earned retirement and… still gets pleasure from diving. The record-breaking dive took place on Ray’s 96th birthday and lasted 48 minutes. In that time, the diver reached a depth of 42.4 metres and was accompanied by a veritable crowd of divers.

It is worth noting that the wreck “Zenobia” is very popular among divers and about 60,000 people visit it every year. So if you have not had the opportunity to dive on it before, it is worth considering a visit to Cyprus. Maybe during the 97th birthday of the oldest diver in the world?

After the dive, representatives of the Larnaca Tourism Development Company and the municipality of Larnaca, surprised the 96-year-old by preparing a birthday cake especially for the occasion. An excited Ray Wooley thanked everyone who had come out that day to honour his feat and support him with their presence. The hero of the day also left no one under any illusions and shouted to the assembled crowd: “See you next year!”

Ray Wooley served in the Royal Navy’s Radio Communications Branch during World War II, working on transport and convoy organisation between 1943 and 1944, before being posted to SBS Special Force 281 in the Dodecanese. He was among the first soldiers of the Allied forces to land on Rhodes when the Germans withdrew in May 1945.
