The end of the Maritime Institute as an independent research unit

The end of the Maritime Institute – it will be absorbed by the Maritime University, informs portalmorski.pl, referring to the regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 27 August 2019 published in the Journal of Laws on 30 August 2019. According to its content, the Maritime Institute in Gdansk will become part of the Maritime University in Gdynia.

The author of the article informing about the above changes stresses that in practice it means liquidation of one of the most meritorious scientific units operating in the Polish maritime economy, which can boast not only rich scientific and substantive output, but also 50 years of history.

According to the information available, the authorities of Gdynia have applied for the merger of the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk and the Maritime University. They motivate their efforts by wanting to strengthen the role and research potential of the university. Unfortunately, as portalmorski.pl rightly points out, in the whole matter no one seems to have taken into consideration the interests of the other interested party.

The changes will come into effect on 1 October 2019 and, as a result, the staff of IM in Gdansk will join the academic staff of UM in Gdynia.

It is worth stressing that the decision was taken in spite of numerous protests from people in marine research and maritime economy circles. An important element that has been raised in criticism of the arrangements made is the fact that the consultations carried out have been superficial and illusory, and that the result of the merger of the IM and UM will be more harmful than positive.
