Almost a year after the Argentine navy lost contact with the Santa Cruz class submarine, it has been reported that the wreck of the vessel has been found lying at a depth of 800 metres in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The international search for the submarine ended months ago. But US company Ocean Infinity, which specialises in mapping the seabed, was contracted at the end of the summer to continue the work using advanced sonar and other technology.

Following the discovery of the object, which measured approximately 60 metres long – the submarine was 67 metres long – remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) were dispatched for a closer inspection. The inspection confirmed that the missing vessel had been found.

The discovery of the ship will bring closure to a story that the whole world has been living, and which is a huge tragedy for 44 families still waiting to hear about their loved ones.
