William Trubridge, who has been practising apnea diving since the age of 8, has already improved the world record in this category from 80m to 95m. The goal of his current attempts will be to reach the 100-metre mark.

“This depth (100m) is more than three times the safe limit for recreational diving with a diving apparatus. Trying to descend to this depth with normal dive kit and air would be considered suicide. The dive takes four minutes but because the muscles are using up precious oxygen all the time it is much more difficult than just holding your breath for even twice as long.” – Trubridge said.

Trubridge, who spends seven months of the year training in the Bahamas, will only be wearing a mask and wetsuit as required for the category in which the record will be broken. Records in the unassisted free diving category are broken without the use of fins. The record attempt will be made between December 10 and 16 at Dean’s Blue Hole, Bahamas.

William is also fascinated by recreational freediving with dolphins, sharks and other underwater creatures. According to him, you can observe the underwater world much better this way than swimming surrounded by bubbles of air exhaled by traditional divers.

The record-breaking event is also intended as an opportunity to draw attention to the endangered Hector’s dolphin species. “There are currently only 100 individuals of this species left in the world – one of the smallest and most beautiful of all dolphin species.” Trubridge said.

“It would be a terrible thing if, in a country that prides itself on its fight for ecology and stopping whaling, we allowed this species to become extinct. “

Freediver hopes to press for increased dolphin care.

William Trubridge was famous for, among other things, swimming the famous The Arch at the Blue Hole in Dahab in one breath.
