Freediving legend William Trubridge swam underwater across Cook Strait to draw attention to the critically endangered dolphin species – New Zealand Tonin Cephalorhynchus hectori and Northern Tonin Cephalorhynchus hectori maui.

The 22-kilometre crossing is the first of its kind. The whole route was divided into 930 dives, during which the New Zealander swam meters holding his breath and surfacing to take a breath. Like a dolphin.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I really didn’t know what to expect. I’d never even swam in this place before, let alone done a similar feat. So everything was one big unknown,” Trubridge said[/blockquote].

Despite his great skill and enthusiasm, the last kilometres took their toll on Trubridg. Strong currents and low temperatures, combined with increasing fatigue, became a tough opponent.

Fortunately, the goal was achieved and the New Zealand freediver’s mission was a success. Truebridge hopes that the uniqueness of the action he carried out will help to protect endangered dolphins.
