Unusual wheelchair for disabled divers – video

Igor Skikevich, a 51-year-old Russian, has designed a unique wheelchair for disabled divers. Thanks to it, every person using a wheelchair will be able to start discovering the beauty of the underwater world. All this is due to the information that the wheelchair will soon go into serial production.

Skikevich designed the diving wheelchair based on his own needs and experience. The Russian is a disabled diver himself. He therefore perfectly understood the problems faced by disabled people who have limited mobility.

The inventor himself called his device a “submarine wheelchair”. (underwater wheelchair – ed.). In addition to the desire to meet the needs of users and remove barriers separating people with disabilities from exploration of the deep, the designer also aimed to make his invention accessible to all, and therefore cheap. The media is reporting an estimated price for the device, which should be in the region of £860!

The Russian is not the first to notice the problem and decide to remedy it. Sue Austin, is a British artist who was the first to create a fully functional wheelchair for divers. However, the difference between the devices is dramatic. The British one costs as much as £7,400!

Igor Skikevich has developed a way of attaching the drive to both wheels of the wheelchair, allowing it to travel a much greater distance underwater. The breathing mixture tank is located at the back of the wheelchair using special straps.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I came up with the idea last year after being on a diving trip in the Sea of Japan. I thought that if I could somehow mount a drive to my wheelchair, I could do a lot more underwater.” – stated the trolley builder[/blockquote].

The inventor of this unusual wheelchair became disabled himself nine years ago. All because of a misdiagnosed problem with the spine in the cervical section. It was even feared that the Russian would be completely paralysed, but he did not give up and surprised everyone.
