Under, apart from the obvious connotation for those who know English, also means ‘miracle’ in Norwegian. That is the name of Europe’s first underwater restaurant, which is located at the southern tip of Norway and partially submerged in the North Sea.

The whole thing was designed by the Norwegian architectural firm Snoehetta, which is behind, among others, the 9/11 MemorialMuseum in New York. The idea and the design must have appealed to people, because… the restaurant has already booked 7,000 reservations! So the staff can’t complain about not being busy…

The venue opened on 20 March, although for now only to family and friends of the owners. Customers will only have full access to the restaurant from April. This way, the owners can do a dress rehearsal and make sure that everything will be in order when the restaurant opens.

Under offers space for around 40 people. In addition to an interesting menu and an eye-catching minimalist and austere design, the restaurant naturally offers a view of the underwater world. All thanks to a huge glass wall offering a view of what is happening about 5 metres below the water’s surface.

The restaurant is obviously not one of the cheapest. Nor is it moderately expensive. A full 18-course tasting menu including drinks, costs up to 3700 crowns (£330) per person.

According to the owners, the building has been designed so that the restaurant can receive customers even during extremely bad, stormy weather. Under is owned by the two Ubostad brothers, who also own a nearby hotel. The restaurateurs expect to attract around 12,000 guests a year.
