The fate of the German submarine was sealed in April 1945 by another submarine belonging to the British Royal Navy. It all happened shortly after U-486 left the harbour in Bergen.

The wreck was and identified in March 2013, during oil exploration and production work carried out on the Norwegian coast by Statoil. Interestingly, the wreck of another Kriegsmarine vessel, U-864, rests nearby.

The unit found was one of nine specimens identified as Type VIIs. The Germans equipped them with a special rubber jacket. Its purpose was to prevent the submarines from being detected by Allied sonar.

There is increasing talk among those involved in research and exploration of the Norwegian coastline about the problem that sunken ships could pose. The biggest threats are of course fuel and ammunition. Another serious problem is the number of wrecks in the region and the fact that new ones are constantly being discovered.
