Torpedoes from the Second World War were excavated at the Hel harbour

Remnants of World War II are found all over the country every day. In most cases these are artillery shells, mortar grenades or aerial bombs. Sometimes the objects found are much larger, such as the torpedoes about 8 metres long, which were recovered by the forces of the 13th minesweeper division from the vicinity of the port of Hel.

Last week, Gdynia-based forces of the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla: the Group of Miner Divers and the crew of the ORP “Flamingo” vessel from the 13th minesweeping squadron carried out an operation to recover three torpedoes from World War II.

This time four large objects were reported by the Maritime Office in Gdynia. As a result of the reconnaissance and after analysing the collected material, it turned out that three objects were training torpedoes, about 8 metres long.

The fourth object turned out to be a steel pipe. The torpedoes were located about 500 metres from the port of Hel and lay at a depth of nearly 30 metres.

Underwater specialists from the 8.FOW extracted the torpedoes aboard the mine destroyer ORP Flaming and transported them to the Hel Basing Point to hand over the objects to the Sapper Patrol.
