thistlegorm2_HR

5th SS Thistlegorm. British container ship sunk by German aircraft in 1941 near Skarm el-Sheikh. Found and filmed by the Jacques Cousteau 1955, but remained hidden for the whole world for another 20 years. The wreck is one of the most popular in Egypt. It is popular mainly because of its shallow depth – 15-30m, the ease of exploration of the interior – open hatches to the holds, its size – 120m long and 17.5m wide, and the wealth of cargo it carries – locomotives, motorbikes, cars and military equipment.

s-s-president-coolidge

4th SS President Coolidge. In its time one of the largest American liners – 200m long and 25m wide. During World War II she was converted into a military transport ship. She was sunk by two mines near Espiritu Santo island in 1942 year. The captain made the manoeuvre of setting the ship aground, which enabled the evacuation of almost 5000 soldiers. In almost intact condition, it starts at a shallow depth of 21m, also being a great attraction during snoorking. Technical divers, however, will not be bored on it, because the deepest point of the wreck is at 73m.

b17b

3rd Blackjack B17. The only aircraft in our list. An American bomber, known as the Flying Fortress. It hit the bottom of the Pacific during the raid on the Japanese base Rabul, in 1943. Despite appearances, it is in surprisingly good condition, lying on a sandy bottom, at a depth of 45-50m. As you explore, you can venture into the cockpit and gun turrets. Marine life thrives all around, creating a unique atmosphere during the dives.

USS_Oriskany

2nd USS Oriskany. American aircraft carrier, was sunk to create the largest artificial reef Florida. The colossus, measuring 275m with a wrap around width of 39m, is one of the most interesting diving attractions in the region. The bridge is located at a depth of about 20m, while the deck is at 40m. It is quite a deep wreck, dedicated to divers with more experience, however also beginners will not be bored during the dive.

fujikawa_prewar

1st Fujikawa Maru. A Japanese freighter 133m long and almost 18m wide, sunk during Operation Hailstone in February 1944. While the Truka Lagoon is one of the most beautiful places for wreck diving. On its deck we can find heavy artillery, zero fighter engines and aircraft parts, as well as many other items as cargo. The dive is classified as rather shallower 18-34m and very enjoyable.
