“Thorr” – New vessel for divers in the Baltic Sea area

We have good information for all divers who appreciate expeditions to wrecks of the Baltic Sea. To the vessels offering such expeditions joined “Thorr”. Patrol boat project 90 (Wisloka class), miraculously saved from the guillotine, which was to turn it into razor blades. Thanks to commitment, love and a capital repair, it gained a new life and a new mission.

However, let’s start from the beginning. First, “Thorr” functioned under the names KP-152 and SG-152, until 30 June 2009, when it underwent a well-deserved retirement. The ceremony of lowering the flag for the last time was attended by the Commander of the Sea Branch of the Border Guard, Cdr. Piotr Stocki, and the staff of the Pomeranian Squadron of the Border Guard. The ceremony took place in the Świnoujście port.

The vessel was built in 1977 in the Gdansk shipyard “Wisla”. In August of the same year the flag of the Navy was raised on her. From that time until 1991 the KP-152 sailed as a part of the Maritime Border Ship Brigade – a separate tactical unit of the Navy and intended for the protection of Polish borders at sea.

This situation lasted until 1 August 1991, when the Marine Unit of the Border Guard was established. KP-152 was transferred to this formation and renamed SG-152.

“Thorr” is one of 12 cutters of project 90 (Wisloka claa – according to NATO code). The dimensions of the unit are 21,2 x 4,5 x 1,2 metres, while its displacement is 42 t. The unit was armed in 2 (1xII) machine guns plot. 12,7 mm. She was propelled by two ZM Wola diesel engines with a total power of 740 kW, which put in motion two screws, ensuring a maximum speed of 12 knots and an economy speed of 9 knots. The operating range was 500 NM. The crew of the vessel consisted of 6 people.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I remember it was a beautiful day. We went by “Sztorm” from Gdynia to the Harcer’s Marina in Gdańsk to help a friend move his boat for repair. Coming back, just after the Siennicki bridge we saw him… He was standing by the wharf of a scrap yard, ready to be processed into razor blades. It was beautiful! Actually, it was an impulse. We had been dreaming about a bigger boat for a long time, so we made a quick call, arranged a meeting and signed the contract. It was ours! Thanks to Jurek Lissowski’s help from Hestia we took care of the towing and much more. Then we had to face the reality that it is not so easy and that we will not make it in a year. Everything had to be replaced. Only the body was left, and some parts had to be replaced as well. Another year passed, and another… And after five years of repair work, under a new name, lost to death, our pride, our beloved ship returned to service!”[/blockquote]

Today “Thorr” joined the legendary “Sztorm” and together they allow divers to reach wrecks hidden in the waters of the Baltic Sea. As you can see, once again, beauty spotted in the midst of a pile of rust, allowed to save a beautiful vessel and give her a new life, so that she can continue to proudly cut the sea waves.
