The premiere of the film “Dolphin Man” will take place in a fortnight. The production tells the life story of Jacques Mayol, the first freediver to break the 100-metre depth barrier.

Beginning in 1950, the film depicts the journey of the eponymous “dolphin man” to his record-breaking dive, revealing the true nature of a man living in direct contact with the sea and its inhabitants. Among all animals, it was with the dolphins that he developed a special bond, and intrigued them with his own underwater abilities.

The film was directed by Lefteris Charitos and narrated by actor Jean-Marc Barr, who played the role of Mayol in “The Big Blue”. Mayol’s pupil Umberto Pelizzari, current world record holder William Trubridge and other characters from the top freedivers of today have also been given their roles.

The film can be seen on the arteTV website 30 September at 20.50. The trailer of this interesting production is available on the film’s home page.

Five days before the premiere – on 25 September – a series of three accompanying documentaries produced using 360° VR technology will be released. Each of them tells the story of one of the characters modelled on Jacques Mayol’s messages: William Trubridge – world record holder in freediving, Fabrice Schnöller – freediver and cetacean researcher, and Sara Cambell – yogini and world record holder in freediving.

These videos will be made available in a special app, and you can find more information here.

Part of the story of Jacques Mayol has already been described by him in his book “Homo Delphinus” published in 2000 (Polish version in 2009). The book is an album with beautiful underwater photographs in which Mayol bravely tries to explain man’s love for water, and especially the sea and oceans, and shows the similarity of man’s “inner ocean” to the primordial ocean. By revealing his love for the sea and our marine “cousins” – the cetaceans, he allows us to awaken the question in our subconscious: Is man really descended from aquatic creatures?
