Scientists from the Middle Kingdom have located the deepest underwater well in the world in the South China Sea! The newly discovered blue hole measures 301 metres and is almost 100 metres deeper than the previous record holder – the legendary Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, which boasts a depth of 202 metres.

The newly discovered well is located near the Paracel Islands, which are disputed territory as both China (calling them Xisha), Vietnam (here called Hoàng Sa) and Taiwan claim rights to them.

The Chinese researchers made their discovery public in the national media last Friday, 22 July. Within a few days, the new discovery had spread around the world and aroused considerable excitement in the water and diving communities.

The well was surveyed using sonar and advanced measuring equipment, as well as underwater robots equipped with video cameras. In addition to the maximum depth, it was also determined, among other things, that the diameter of Dragon Hole at the surface is 130 metres and 36 metres at the bottom. The location is inhabited by around 20 different species of marine creatures.

The newest blue hole was given a name, unambiguously associating it with the largest country that claims rights to this region – Dragon Hole. Its depth of 300.89 metres makes it an attractive place for various diving events and a place frequented by tourists.

Dragon Hole will probably not make the legendary Dean’s Blue Hole lose its popularity, but knowing the capabilities and eagerness of Chinese investors and businessmen, surely its potential will not go unnoticed and untapped.

Radio China International even gave the exact location of the well, which is at 16.31 degrees north latitude and 111.46 degrees east longitude.
