Tens of tons of relics excavated from the bottom of the Oder River – video

During the dredging of the Świnoujście-Szczecin fairway, tens of tonnes of relics were found and brought to the surface. Among them are fragments of a U-boat and the battleship Lützow! The items have been secured and will soon be taken to museums in the region, where they will be exhibited after appropriate preparation.

From the information available, it is known that among the huge number of excavated artefacts there are items from medieval times. The variety of objects found is enormous and each one represents a separate story. What is more, according to experts, the objects are in excellent condition for such a long stay in the canal waters.

Among the relics found are parts of armament, elements of various vessels, including even a German U-boat! There are also various anchors, an anchor windlass, as well as old, pre-war riveted buoys dating back to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which once marked the borders of the waterway.

What is most impressive, however, is the fragment of the German battleship Lützow that has been found, specifically the 280mm artillery turret rear wall, weighing 9 tonnes.

Employees of the Kołobrzeg Maritime Open Air Museum, where the excavated artefacts will be transported, will have their hands full. Here they will be cleaned, restored and prepared to shine again. This time as museum exhibits and evidence of the extraordinary history of this area.

“Thanks to the cooperation with the Maritime Office in Szczecin, more than 40 tonnes of finds have so far been saved from irretrievable loss. These include both items of equipment from civilian vessels and interesting testimonies of World War II. Among the most interesting are various types of anchors, buoys manufactured at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, parts of steam engines and elements of the German pocket battleship “Luetzow”.” – said Aleksander Ostasz, Director of the Museum of Polish Arms in Kołobrzeg, in an interview with polska-morska.pl

As Ostasz stresses, saving all these wonderful and unique monuments was possible thanks to the decisions taken by the Szczecin Maritime Office, which is responsible for the investment.
