8-year-old Saga Vanecek made an unusual find. While on holiday with her parents at a lake in southern Sweden, she found a Viking sword from 1500 years ago! After the item was identified as a valuable historical find, the site was examined by archaeologists who managed to retrieve further artefacts from the lake.

It was another summer day. Near the village of Tånnö, Saga Vanecek was collecting stones in the waters of Lake Vidöstern. At one point she felt a strange shape under her feet that interested her. When she pulled it out, it was hard to recognise the sword of the legendary Scandinavian warriors in it, more like a strange branch.

However, the girl’s father decided to show the object to his friend. He immediately noticed the handle and recognised the shape of the sword. From that moment everything went very quickly. The authorities were notified and the sword was handed over to the museums in Jönköpings Läns.

The age of the find was initially put at 1000 years, but subsequent research and finds suggest that it is most likely 1500 years old! Archaeologists who have explored the waters of the lake have come across another valuable item – a brooch from the 3rd century.
