Sunken ancient city in China – video

Shicheng (Lion City), is an ancient city located in one of the eastern provinces of China – Zhejiang. Seemingly nothing unusual, after all China is one of the oldest civilisations on Earth, so despite decades of communist rule, it should be full of ancient monuments and buildings. Yes, it is. In this case, however, everything boils down to the exact location of the city and its state of preservation.

The Lion City owes its name to the magnificent sculptures of lions guarding the city gates. The most remarkable thing about it, however, is that it has survived to this day… completely submerged in the waters of Qiandao Lake! Today it once again pleases the beautiful human eyes, which have found the surviving ancient buildings at a depth of almost 30 metres.

There was a lot of publicity about this wonderful find in early 2012. It was then that the Chinese edition of National Geographic published beautiful photos of the sunken city. We did not have to wait long for a reaction. The world of explorers and history lovers fell in love with the majestic buildings of Shicheng.

The 1,339-year-old city was founded during the Eastern Han Dynasty, which ruled from 25-220 AD. It went underwater in 1959 as a result of work carried out on a hydroelectric power station on the Xin’an River.

International archaeological experts have christened the find a “time capsule”. Since all the Lion City’s structures have been protected from erosion caused by wind, sun and rain, the city is in sensational condition.

At one time, the Lion City was the cultural, economic and political capital of the region. As recorded in the chronicles, 265 arches on its territory were under water, as well as many interesting sculptures. From the image of the city that we managed to obtain from old maps, we learn that there were 5 gates leading in different directions, each crowned with a watchtower.
