Sierra 2014 expedition starts soon

In just 8 days, the Another wreck expedition to Sierra Leone. Our friends organising this venture are putting the final touches to the details. Meanwhile, from the headquarters of the international Explorers Club came the information that this year’s mission will also take place under the banner of this legendary association.

In connection with this, the participants of the expedition will once again receive one of the Explorers Club flags, which is a great honour and distinction. Founded in 1904 in New York, the club has been supporting and popularising scientific research aimed at preserving the world’s natural and cultural heritage for over a century.

What is more, our friends and their work have been appreciated not only by the diving and prospecting community, but also by the local authorities. Before they set off to explore Sierra Leone’s coastal waters, they will first pay an official visit to a representative of the local government – Mr. Peter Bayuku-Koneth in his capacity as Minister of Culture and Tourism.

In the international group making up this year’s expedition, the organisers have managed to gather real specialists in their fields. Thus, Sierra Leone will be visited, among others, by

Peter Wytykowski – leader of the whole team and one of the originators, member of The Explorers Club and participant of several wreck expeditions.

Robert Głuchowski – wreck diver, maritime history enthusiast, participant of many wreck expeditions and explorations, collector of maritime objects.

Captain Mark “Sharky” Alexander – owner of Sharky Underwater Expeditions, has been diving since 1991. He is an experienced technical diver, who has made many explorations in various conditions, in many equipment configurations and with the use of various breathing mixtures. He has participated in expeditions to legendary wrecks such as: Andrea Doria, Graf Zeppelin, Wilhelm Gustloff, USS Monitor, EM Clark or U-869 – sunken on the east coast of the USA.

Leigh Bishop – a character who does not need special introduction. The Englishman is a legend of wreck diving and a pioneer of deep underwater photography. He has identified and documented hundreds of wrecks all over the world. In the last few years, he has participated in all the major wreck expeditions, especially those where breathing mixtures and the latest technological advances were used to explore the deepest findings.

Rafał Reichert – PhD in history at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He specialises in the history of the Caribbean, Spain as well as maritime history and underwater archaeology. He is currently conducting research for the Centro de Estudios Superiores de México y Centramérica (CESMECA) at the Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas in Mexico.

Michael Pizzio has been diving since 1976 and is an instructor of many federations (IANTD, TDI, PADI), up to the trimix and rebreather instructor level. Member of The Explorers Club and participant of many expeditions organised under its banner, many of which were recorded by such channels as History Channel, National Geographic and Learning Channel.

Kiersten Mottl – is currently finishing her license in marine biology and is preparing to start postgraduate studies in the same field. She is certified as a PADI divemaster diver and has participated in dives on many wrecks in Florida, North Carolina and the Caribbean. This will be her first expedition.

More information coming soon! The organizers have also provided us with an item related to the upcoming expedition, which will constitute a prize in our upcoming competition! So stay tuned and follow closely the posts related to the Sierra 2014 expedition!
