Second class professional diver course – report part I

We can’t believe it….ale happened we are in Norway near Oslo at the famous school for professional divers! Magda Nowakowska (IA UW) and Mateusz Popek (UMK), (that is us) two underwater archaeologists, in February this year started training to become professional divers of the second class. We did the first part in the Zakrzówek and Jaworzno quarries. We had a chance to practice underwater concreting, cutting and welding.

The next, second part of the course (one week) is at the NYD training centre in Norway. We set off today from snowy Warsaw at 10.30 a.m. and after landing around 1 p.m. we arrived at the place….We are in paradise!!!! We were greeted by a northern high, light frost and sharp sun reflecting off the Oslofjord…

The school is located about an hour away from Oslo, where we were picked up in the school cars. After lunch at a local pub, which included fresh prawns and Norwegian salmon, Dag, co-owner and manager of the school, led us to the place where we would spend our dream week!

The school is located on a jetty built along the Oslofjord. It is a system of containers, both our living and lecture rooms, and the entire underwater training base, i.e. 8 stations plus facilities. Among them, for example, stand 1 – classic dives, stand 2 – AH3 and AH 5 i.e. flow helmets, then diving bells…. decompression chambers…. and everything ends with a banal SCUBA…:)

It is impossible to describe this place, so we will try, day by day, to report on our stay, exercising richly illustrating it. It is enough that we already live in the fjord…because not even over….
In the evening a lecture and a short greeting. Tomorrow we enter the world of serious underwater work…welcome.

Nothing attracts more powerfully than the abyss.

Magda and Matthew
