All indications are that Sea Shepherd‘s well-worn flagship, the M/V “Steve Irwin”, will be sunk, turning into another artificial reef. Can you imagine a better end for a vessel on which environmentalists fought to save representatives of endangered species among marine fauna?

The Australian Dive Industry of Victoria Association (DIVA) has announced that it has reached an agreement with representatives of Sea Shepherd to take over the vessel “Steve Irvin” and this will be sunk as an artificial reef in the coastal waters of Melbourne, where it will become a sanctuary of marine life for many species and a great attraction for diving tourists from around the world.

However, Sea Shepherd ‘s donation is dependent on DIVA representatives succeeding in raising funds to clean the vessel and prepare it for safe sinking and on them obtaining the appropriate permits. From the information available, we know that Melbourne is in competition with another Australian city to acquire the deserving vessel.

With the end of service of the M/Y “Steve Irwin”, the new flagship of the Sea Shepherd organisation became the M/Y “Ocean Warrior”.
