Underwater, especially in domestic waters, a very important element of our equipment, will be properly selected torch. Looking through the offer of diving shops, we will come across a huge number of items to choose from. Today, I decided to introduce a torch that I came across for the first time in November 2009.

At the diving conference Baltictech in Cetniewo, I was wandering from one stand to another browsing all the best the various exhibitors had to offer. At the Scubapro stand, I got my hands on an inconspicuous looking and quite lightweight backup torch Nova Light 230.

Made of aluminium, weighing 410g together with batteries, it fits well in the hand and at first glance gives the impression of being solid. During further examination, my attention is drawn to the light source and… I’m surprised, to say the least. One, tiny LED does not make an electrifying impression. On the contrary, it creates doubts about the assurances of the 230’s “uniqueness” and “high power”.

All my scepticism disappears with the first switch on of the torch. A solid strong column of light illuminates the darkness under the roof of the exhibition hall. The range combined with the strength of the light are impressive. Powered by three R14 batteries, the tiny LED is a real powerhouse among similar sized products. Nova Light produces light with a temperature/colour between 5000K and 6000K and an output of 230 lumens!

Excitedly, I couldn’t wait to try it out under combat conditions. Unfortunately, the torch was supposed to be available for sale only in three months. However, it was worth waiting, although it was not without surprises, because the batteries in Nova Light, to my surprise, are inserted + on the spring, which is completely opposite to most battery-powered devices. The kit includes, apart from the torch, a spare set of o-rings for sealing and a retractor for tying our light, which I recommend to replace with a steel snap hook.

The good first impression at the fair was fully reflected under water. Both in the dark depths of a lake and on Baltic wrecks, the Nova Light 230 presents itself like a Jedi knight’s lightsaber. It performs well as a headlamp in recreational diving and is ideal as a backup for divers who use HID torches with a separate battery. Another element that speaks in favour of the 230 is the long battery life. By using the latest advances in LED technology, we have managed to create a product that provides a strong light and does not consume huge amounts of energy, which translates into a battery life of 14-18h.

In my opinion, the product is worth recommending, not only because of the “performance”, but also the small size, weight and above all – the price. The lucky owner of Scubapro Nova Light 230, we can become an owner for less than 350pln, which looking at the prices of lighting does not seem too high.
