Probably not many people today associate Christian Lambertsen. A doctor and soldier born in New Jersey in 1917, who made an enormous contribution to the development and history of diving. Mr Lambertsen gave invaluable services and it is safe to say that when it comes to modern diving, he is one of its progenitors.

Lambertsen, apart from being involved in diving medicine, was also an inventor and creator of diving equipment. His first project was the equipment known by the acronym LARU – Lambertsen Underwater Respiratory Unit, created for the US Army.

While we are on the subject of abbreviations, a fundamental fact must not be overlooked – Lambertsen is the creator of the abbreviation we all know today and which is associated unambiguously – SCUBA. Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. This name was first used to name the Frogman rebreather, created as part of a US Navy project.

It was he who initiated and developed the diving and diver training project in the US Navy.

Above is a video showing the equipment that is the great grandfather of today’s recreational equipment. This is a great overview lesson on the history of diving and how it began.
