Russians discover unknown German WWII wreck in Gdansk Bay
Listen to this article

Off the coast of Kaliningrad, in the area of the Bay of Gdańsk, the crew of the research vessel “Akademik Nikolai Strakhov” located the wreck of a German vessel from the times of the Second World War. Interesting in this case is the fact that the discovered wreck is unknown to anyone and not listed in any databases or registers.

A communiqué published by the Russian news agency Interfax stated that the wreckage located was a military unit, most likely a barge, belonging to Germany. It was also hypothesised that it had been used to carry out evacuations of people from East Prussia and hence the possible lack of information in any records.

As for the cause of the sinking of the unknown wreck, scientists from the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences believe that the most likely cause is that it was sunk by aircraft of the British Royal Air Force, which carried out massive raids on Königsberg. This would explain, among other things, the lack of information in Soviet archives regarding the sinking of a German vessel in the area.

As the leader of the expedition, Dmitry Dorokhov, assured, further examinations of the found wreck are planned, which will allow for more complete documentation of the found vessel and perhaps learning more about its history and identification.
