Russian divers are preparing for a very unusual and dangerous mission, which they plan to carry out in the deep sea. Our neighbours’ plans involve testing a new diving vessel at a depth of… 450 metres!

Preparations for this operation are currently underway and the dive itself is expected to be carried out in the next few months. The Research Institute for Underwater Rescue and Technology, together with the Russian Navy’s salvage team, has already begun preparing divers, to descend to this depth.

Both the precise date and the exact location where the dive will be carried out are unknown. All that is known so far is that it will take place in one of the countries of the Far East and in the waters of the Red Sea.

The divers of the Russian Navy are known as deep-sea diving specialists. They belong to an independent branch of the Russian Navy. Their work is done within the limits of human capabilities and its complexity is comparable to spacewalks.

Expertly trained, they can be used for underwater rescue, military and non-military operations, as well as working on underwater communication lines, special acoustic systems and mining operations.

Russian sources declined to confirm whether the unit’s development was caused by the sinking of the Kursk submarine in 2000 and all the consequences of that accident.
