The documentary “Dive into the unknown”, which has been stirring up a lot of emotions for a long time, will finally be screened in Poland. It will have its premiere in Poland during the Millenium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival starting next Friday, 13 May. The number of screenings and their dates as well as the fact that the film will only be shown in Warsaw are not very good news. It certainly won’t allow the film to attract the kind of audience one could hope for in case of a nationwide distribution.
In Poland, the film will appear under the title “Diving into the unknown”. Unfortunately, anyone who would like to see this one of the most anticipated film productions by the diving community will only have three opportunities to do so. All screenings will take place at Warsaw’s “Luna” cinema, located at 28 Marszałkowska Street on 13, 16 and 18 May 2016. The film will be screened in its original language version with Polish subtitles included. Ticket reservations can be made via the official website of Luna cinema.
“Diving into the unknown” tells the story of divers who return to Norway’s Plura cave after a tragic accident to retrieve the bodies of their friends who died during the exploration. Those who survived the tragic dive decide to put their lives on the line to bring the bodies of their friends to the surface. This is how the filmmakers heralded their documentary, arousing huge interest in the international diving community.
The Scandinavian production, is a documentary film describing the return to the site of a tragic dive, where the lives of a group of friends changed forever. For some it was the end, and for those who were lucky and survived, the turning point and one of the most tragic experiences of their diving careers. Now they are returning to collect the bodies of their friends to take them on their final journey home.
The mission to recover the bodies of the two divers, which proved too risky for the rescue services and the police to carry out, now rests on the shoulders of those who care most – the colleagues and friends who took part in the fatal dive. Despite being forbidden to do so, they set off in secret to Norway’s Plura cave in order to reach the terminal located at a depth of 110 metres and reach the bodies of their comrades. The emotional weight of the biggest one we can imagine, but also the motivation and conviction that the whole action is right, are unquestionable, and nobody even assumes that it is possible to do otherwise, and that the whole thing could end in failure.
The entire footage is a compilation of what was captured by the individual divers’ GoPro cameras, drones and professional film equipment. Magnificent frames and breathtaking POV (point of view – the view from the perspective of the person holding the camera – ed.) shots create an unusual mixture, wonderfully conveying the silence, darkness and claustrophobic atmosphere of diving in an overhead environment. Let’s remember that the target depth is 110 metres. In such conditions, capturing photo/video material of the highest quality is a real art, especially when you consider what the purpose of the dive was.
The film premiered in Finland at the beginning of the year on February 19. Since then, the documentary has been very well received in other countries in Europe and North America, gaining recognition and favourable reviews at many film festivals.
