At last we have our first equipment. Maybe not yet fully complete, but there is already some of it and it would be good to learn a few tricks, concerning diving equipment, which will make our lives easier. During the OWD course we learn how to dive and use particular elements of the equipment, however it is worth knowing how to handle our equipment after, and between, subsequent dives.
We have become the lucky owners of several items, such as. mask, fins, automatic, jacket or wetsuit. During subsequent dives we will notice that many people have the same equipment as ours, or confusingly similar. So it is worth doing something to be able to easily identify our property. Standard practice is to sign each piece of equipment (preferably with a white visible marker). This will protect us from unpleasant situations, such as accidental exchange of equipment with companions or theft, which can happen anywhere. Marked equipment will also protect us from being mistaken and accused of appropriating someone else’s property.
The breathing apparatus, a part of the way and ensures our survival underwater, so we should take good care of it. It is important to store and transport it in the safest possible conditions. We should buy a container or a case in which it will be protected against damage and dirt right away. In addition, an appropriate bag will be perfect for travelling, making the machine a hand luggage.
The more equipment you have, the greater the risk that something may get damaged or simply destroyed as a result of use or transport. An appropriate set of spare parts will protect us against such an eventuality. Our “box” should contain such items as: a spare strap for the mask and the same for the fins, O-rings, mouthpiece for the regulator, glue for the neoprene, silicone grease, a few screws, a piece of string, adhesive tape, spare batteries for the torch, plastic clamps, and whatever we find useful. Even if our equipment is regularly maintained, we never know when we will need spare parts. We should also remember that diving is a partner sport and if our buddy is unable to dive due to a fault, we too will miss out on the fun.
After a successful dive, we often feel like getting dressed right away, packing our gear and heading back out. However, let’s not rush, because most often it is because of rushing that we can get into trouble. Remember to rinse your equipment well in running water after each dive. Thanks to this we will remove all the dirt, which if left for a longer period of time, may cause various faults and eventually damage our equipment.
Having your own diving gear is certainly a great comfort and pleasure. Each piece of equipment is another investment, therefore we should act according to the rules of business, i.e. take care of our investments and do everything to make them function and prosper, bringing us a certain profit. In this case, it will be a great pleasure from further successful dives!
