It has happened! The most advanced research vessel ever created has set sail. OceanXplorer, as it is called, is a true wonder of technology which will allow scientists to carry out marine research at any latitude.

The vessel measures 87 metres in length and is simply packed with state-of-the-art apparatus and equipment. The whole is designed to enable the crew to carry out work in all conditions and on many planes. The scientists will have at their disposal, among other things, a 40-tonne crane, a helicopter, manned and unmanned underwater vehicles, enabling exploration of the big blue to depths of 1000 m and 6000 m respectively!

In addition, the vessel has been equipped with a state-of-the-art multimedia studio, with the help of which the team working on board OceanXplorer will be able to create amazing films. It is currently the only vessel that can present footage captured with 8K RED cameras from a depth of 6,000m.

According to those responsible for designing the entire structure, the biggest challenge was making sure the vessel met the requirements for a variety of disciplines, from scientists to submarine operators, ROVs, helicopters and film production crews.

Such unique capabilities and levels of technological sophistication should come as no surprise, however. OceanXplorer was designed in collaboration with legendary director and deep sea explorer James Cameron and the Avatar Alliance Foundation.

It was also revealed in passing that there will be a six-episode documentary series Mission: OceanX, co-produced with James Cameron by OceanX and BBC Studios, all of which will be produced for National Geographic.

I believe that ocean exploration is more important and exciting than space exploration and that OceanXplorer will show the world that this is true. The ship will take researchers to never-before-seen underwater worlds and allow them to beam whatever they encounter along the way to the surface. Everything will be done through social media, interactive programmes and a TV series. It’s going to be amazing! – said Ray Dalio, co-founder of OceanX and president of Dalio Philanthropies
