Turkish diver Cem Karabay has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest dive in cold sea water. The attempt began on 23 April 2018 and was a complete success. While diving in the waters surrounding the island of Gökçeada, the diver achieved a score of over 30h!

Cem Karabay is known as the ‘Aquarium Man’ because he works at the Underwater Marine Park, located on Turkey’s largest island of Gökçeada. The entire dive was well prepared and planned, with a team of 20 people working together to support Karabay every step of the way.

The initial plan was to dive less than 24 hours, but the final result was 30h and 20min! With his feat, Karabay dethroned the previous record holder Nils-Roar Selnes, who spent 15h and 10min underwater in Eidkjosen, Norway, in 2016. It is therefore safe to say that the previous record has been outright crushed by the Turk.

The freshly broken Guinness World Record was a real challenge and, according to its holder, the most difficult diving feat ever attempted. And you should know that Karabay has repeatedly attempted to break various underwater records (including over 192 hours in a pool in 2011), usually timing his attempts on important Turkish holidays and anniversaries.

This time was no different, and the rehearsal date – 23 April 2018 – was set to mark the round 20th anniversary of Troy’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which by the way is also Independence Day and Children’s Day in Turkey.

[blockquote style=”2″]”Everyone thinks that Troy is located in Greece. Our goal is, among other things, to popularise knowledge about Troy, as well as to make people aware that it is located in Turkey, in the Çanakkale district.” – Karabay said.[/blockquote]

The entire rehearsal could be followed live on the official event website – www.cemkarabay.com.
