The ship began to be built at the Deutsche Werke Kiel shipyard in 1937, but the outbreak of World War II severely delayed her completion. In 1942 “Franken” was towed to the Burmeister & Wain shipyard in Copenhagen, where she was completed, armed and ready for service.
[blockquote style=”2″]”The Franken is a German powered tanker sunk near Hel by Soviet aviation during World War II, on 8 April 1945. For divers it is a special wreck, because it is connected with a story of great passion and at the same time great tragedy. Diving on the wreck is difficult and demanding, as you have to go below 40 meters, so partial decompression is necessary.”[/blockquote]
Over the years, the wreck of the “Franken” tanker became the biggest attraction in the Gulf of Gdansk for divers interested in technical diving. Due to its great depth, among other things, the vessel posed a real challenge for any diver who decided to visit it, which unfortunately sometimes ended tragically.
[blockquote style=”1″]”It is a very difficult wreck to enter and penetrate the rooms. Three divers died on it – one Czech and two Poles. So to the whole list of victims that the Franken had on its account when it sank in 1945, you have to add these three people,” says Tomek Stachura, head of the diving team. “In the penultimate episode of the first series of ‘Mysteries of the Baltic Wrecks’, viewers will participate in a special event – divers will be submerging a monument to their lost colleagues, which will rest on the surface of one of the most dangerous objects of wreck diving.”[/blockquote]
The series premieres on the Canal+ Discovery channel and via the nc+go app.
