The Royal Navy research vessel HMS Echo has encountered a previously unknown underwater mountain in the Red Sea. The hill is the size of the Rock of Gibraltar (almost 430m). British scientists are surprised and fascinated by their discovery,
Slightly less enthusiastic are the Yemeni fishermen, who seemed to have known of the mountain’s existence for a long time. The mountain was “found” when HMS Echo anchored near its summit to survey the surrounding area.
Until now, everyone thought that the bottom in this area starts at a depth of 385m, but during the 8-hour measurements it turned out that things are completely different. After processing the collected material in less than 24 hours, HMS Echo’s on-board computers showed a startling picture.
It turns out that just 40m below the water’s surface, the top of a newly discovered mountain begins. While surface vessels can feel safe, submarines will have to take note of the British researchers’ find.
