According to Sea Shepherd representatives, they counted about 210 white-beaked dolphins that were herded into a bay near the village of Hvalvík, located on the Sundini Strait, and then killed. All as part of a traditional slaughter bearing the name Grindadráp (from grindwales – mammals of the dolphin family that are usually the prey).
So far, no one has succeeded in influencing the inhabitants to stop this macabre practice. Every year, the bay into which the animals are herded turns into a body of water covered with the blood of hundreds of animals.
The tradition, which the locals take very seriously, dates back to ancient Viking times and today has only a symbolic dimension. Unless you are a dolphin, whale or porpoise, then it is a fight for survival.
