On the morning of 18 July, three divers were rescued at a popular diving site on the Maltese island of Gozo. The group were diving at Xatt l-Aħmar , where three wrecks lie on the bottom, sunk as an artificial reef.

According to several sources who provided information to the local press, one of the divers ascended too quickly and as a result there was a possibility of decompression sickness. All three divers were taken to the Gozo General Hospital for further assistance.

The men involved in the dive are soldiers in the Maltese armed forces and have received training from the AFM. The whole incident was confirmed by a local police spokeswoman.

Xatt l-Ahmar is a popular site on the south-east coast of the island of Gozo. It is formed by three wrecks: M/V “Cominoland”, M/V “Karwela” and M/V “Xlendi”, a wall reef with several caves and a rather shallow bay. The first two wrecks date from 2006, while the wreck “Xlendi” dates from 1999. The maximum depth on all three is 40 m.
