Maldives diver Shafraz “Shaff” Naeem intends to spend 50 hours underwater. All to celebrate the country’s 50 years in the diving industry.

This extraordinary dive lasting 50 hours has been planned by the organisers for the last weekend of February 2022. The event will begin at 6.50am on February 25, at a site known as Kuda Giri in the South Male Atoll. Organisers hope that by then travel restrictions will have been relaxed and the event will prove to be a wonderful celebration of diving.

The organisers’ aim was to bring together representatives from the local and international diving community. Including, among others, divers, marine researchers and environmental activists, all with the aim of raising awareness about the oceans.

We want to work together to find solutions to the problems of plastic pollution, climate change, the protection of endangered species and entire marine ecosystems. – – informed the event organiser, Unix Sporting.

Unix Sporting is a team of entrepreneurs working together to deliver exceptional sporting events in the Maldives. Celebrating the country’s half-century in the diving industry seems the perfect opportunity to do so.

The longest dive in the sea and at the same time the Guinness record belongs to an Egyptian diver Saddam Killany. The Egyptian spent 145 hours and 30 minutes underwater during his dive in Dahab. The diver from the Maldives, however, does not intend to attempt such a result, and a round 50 hours will be enough for him. This result will be a local record and honour five decades of diving in the Maldives.

The dive, undertaken by Shafraz “Shaff” Naeem, will be streamed live via YouTube and Facebook. In addition to the main event, which is a 50-hour dive, organisers have also planned diving and training camps, freediving camps and diving expeditions to Huvadhoo, Fuvahmulah and Addu atolls.

The event has received support from local dive centres and the Maldives Police Force, the National Defence Force and the Ministry of Tourism. The whole event is sponsored by diving brands Dive Systems UK, Fourth Element, Luminox, Shearwater Research and TSK Zurich.

My love for scuba diving started as a 12-year-old in the Canary Islands, at which time I took my first Open Water Diver course. This love for the blue turned into a huge passion that accompanies me to this day. Although blue is hard to come by in the Baltic, no conditions are terrible for me. In this sport, I find peace, patience, courage, focus, and balance. I have recently started to engage in underwater modeling and I am fulfilled with this.
