Life writes the most extraordinary scenarios. Today we are dealing with another one, because 60 years after the first people – Don Walsh and Jaques Piccard – reached the deepest place on our planet, the son of one of them, Kelly Walsh, repeated his father’s feat and also descended to the depth of almost 11 km, becoming the 12th person to do so.

During a 12-hour submersion, the crew of the two-man submersible vehicle, led by Victor Vescovo, reached a depth of 10925 metres and spent four hours on the bottom, exploring exactly the same area that Walsh senior and Piccard had visited 60 years earlier.

“It was an extremely emotional experience,” said an emotional Kelly Walsh after returning to the surface

You can read more about the first expedition to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in our January’s text published on the 60th anniversary of the plunge, which was carried out by Don Walsh and Jaques Piccard.

Another interesting fact worth mentioning is that Kelly Walsh, by becoming the 12th person to go to the deepest place on Earth, has sort of evened the ‘competition’ with the astronauts who have visited the moon. Until recently it was quite common to hear that the Challenger Deep had been visited by fewer people than had been to the moon. At the moment there is a tie…
