When looking at pictures of sunken wrecks, it is rare to see them from such an unusual perspective. Most of them are taken while diving, so it is not surprising that pictures taken from the air quickly spread in the diving part of the Internet.

Coast Guard officials focused their documentation on the shallow wrecks scattered between Sleeping Bear Point and Leland. This region is part of the Manitou Isthmus and contains many wrecks dating back to the 19th century and early 20th century, when boats and ships were the primary form of transportation between the surrounding towns.

Among the vessels immortalised were the “Rising Sun” – a 40-metre wreck of a wooden steamer that wrecked in 1917, the “James McBride” – a 37-metre brig from 1857. The photographs also included several vessels that still remain unidentified.

Due to various factors such as beach erosion, wave action, wind and different water levels, different wrecks and fragments of wrecks are visible at certain times of the year.
