This past Monday, University of Victoria student Mike Irvine became the first man in history to defend his degree underwater. The whole thing was conducted in such unusual circumstances to draw attention to how underwater technology can support and help appreciate the science of the sea and everything related to it.

This form of examination was made possible by the use of appropriate equipment including a full face mask and an underwater communication module. In this way, members of the exam board, located in the nearby marina, were able to ask questions and receive answers coming from a depth of 6m.

The exam was streamed live on youtube

“This idea has matured over the last four years. I wanted to share the joy of diving with others. When my professors found out about the idea they were shocked! The first question that came up was of course why?” – Mike Irvin explains.

Irvine’s thesis topic was about creating a connection between students and the ocean by using technology, e.g. video cameras, to motivate students to engage with marine science and raise awareness about ocean conservation.

“I will admit that it is not a standard procedure and usually the oral examination has to be conducted on campus. However, this time we decided to make an exception. We think that the academic work that Mike is doing is so innovative and interesting that it was worth allowing an exception to the rule ,” explained one of the examiners.

The man himself has said he intends to continue educating others about marine life issues, and Fish Eye Projeckt, a company he co-founded, will help.
