According to foreign media, actress and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence will play the main role in the drama “The Dive”. The film, whose producer is a well-known lover of the underwater world – James Cameron, tells a story of a French freediver and a record-holder in this discipline, who died during one of deep dives.

The plot is based on authentic events involving a married couple who share a passion for deep diving and breaking new records in breath-hold diving, which eventually leads to a tragic end and death.

The characters and events are based on the story of Audrey Mestre. A French-born freediver who also studied marine biology, she was a leading figure in free diving in the mid-1990s and set several records. Mestre was married to renowned freediver Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras, with whom she trained together.

The tragic dive occurred in November 2002. During an attempt to break her husband’s record and descend to a depth of 531 feet (approx. 162m), there was a problem with the balloon that was supposed to bring Mestre safely back to the surface. It took 9min to bring the unconscious Frenchwoman to the surface. Unfortunately, her resuscitation was not successful. Audrey Mestre was 28 years old at the time of her death.

Since then, many theories have been circulating in the diving world about what really happened during the fateful dive? Carlos Serra, the co-organiser of Mestre’s last dive, put his own point of view on the accident and its causes in his book “The Last Attempt”, blaming Ferreras for the tragedy. “Pipin”, in turn, published a book entitled “The Dive: A Story from Love and Obsession”, in which he describes the life of his wife.

At the moment it is not known on which item the script of James Cameron’s film will be based. However, it is certain that filming will begin later this year.

We recommend the accompanying 50-minute documentary ‘No Limits’ about Audrey Mestre, Francisco Ferreras and a tragic dive that ended in a fatal accident.
