On the island of Eil Malk which forms part of beautiful Palau, there is one of the most amazing lakes on the planet – Jellyfish Lake. It is a saltwater reservoir located between Koror and Peleliu on the southern, mostly uninhabited part of Palau Lagoon. Its waters connect to the ocean through fissures and tunnels in the limestone structure separating it from open water.

The reservoir is about 30 metres deep. On this basis, and thanks to accumulated sediments, its age has been estimated at 12 thousand years, which is as old as the Baltic Sea, among others!

Jellyfish Lake is famous for the jellyfish that inhabit it. They are unique in the entire world. Having no natural enemies, they have lost their parasols as a result of evolution and pose no threat to tourists visiting the lake. And they come in large numbers to enjoy the incredible sights that await just under the surface of the water. One of the biggest and most spectacular attractions are the golden jellyfish, which migrate across the lake every day.

You can only swim and snoorkl in this amazing body of water, which is a very popular activity for visitors to Palau. Diving is completely prohibited with an aqualung. This is due to the danger posed to jellyfish by air bubbles rising to the surface. The second danger is for the diver and is the high concentration of hydrogen sulphide, which is present in the lake from a depth of 15 m (the anaerobic zone begins there), and which can be absorbed through the skin and eventually lead to death.
