The water and rescue team of the fire brigade conducting exercises near Sieradz found a sunken car and the corpse of the driver. It was supposed to be another day of routine exercises, but a moment after arriving at the reservoir, it turned into a rescue operation.

Firefighters from Sieradz went to the Próba reservoir on the Żeglina River, located about 10 km from the city. The place is popular among local anglers, but this time it was empty on the bank. The firefighters preparing to enter the water noticed, however, that in one place on the water the waves were breaking in a strange way.

“This was supposed to be an activity that our divers do regularly. At one point in the reservoir they noticed that the waves were crashing against something. One of the divers swam over to see what it was.” – Junior Brigadier Jarosław Wasylik from the Sieradz fire brigade told TVN journalists.

Closer inspection revealed a submerged car in the area, with waves crashing over its protruding blue roof. On further examination divers found the corpse of the driver in the car. As they are not qualified to pronounce death, they proceeded to perform CPR and called the ambulance service. The action ended when the doctor who arrived at the scene pronounced death.

The victim was identified as a 64-year-old resident of Sieradz. According to the findings, he was supposed to have come fishing in the evening of the previous day. The most likely hypotheses accepted by investigators are that he collapsed or fell asleep at the wheel. However, the involvement of third parties is not excluded. The exact causes of death will be determined at an autopsy.
